How to grade a test by the number wrong
Take the wrong answers off the question total, divide what is left by the total, and multiply by 100.
On a test of 20 questions with 3 wrong, 17 are correct. 17 divided by 20 is 0.85, which is 85%, a B. Each question on that test carries 5% of the score, so every miss costs the same amount and the chart above runs the whole way down.
A test marked in points rather than counted questions works the same way once the points are in, which is what the test grade calculator takes.
What one wrong answer costs at each question count
The fewer the questions, the more each one is worth. A 5-question quiz drops 20% per miss, and a 100-question exam drops 1%.

The letters in that table come from the site's default cutoffs, and a test is one score inside a category that carries a weight, which is where the grade calculator picks it up.
