The bonus comes from the table selected in the form. Districts set their own amounts, and some weight no courses at all, so switch tables if yours pays a different bonus.
How a weighted GPA is calculated
Add the bonus the course level earns to the letter's grade points, multiply by the credit hours, add the quality points up, then divide by the credit hours.
AP Chemistry at A is worth 4.00 grade points before the bonus and 5.00 after it, so over 4 credit hours it carries 20 quality points. Honors Algebra at B+ goes from 3.30 to 3.80, and English at B stays at 3.00 because a regular course earns nothing extra. Those four courses come to 44.4 quality points over 11 credit hours, a weighted GPA of 4.04.
The same four courses without the bonus come to 38.9 quality points and a GPA of 3.54, which is the figure the GPA calculator returns and the one most colleges recalculate for themselves.
Honors and AP grade points
Honors adds 0.50 grade points and AP, IB, dual enrollment and AICE add 1.00, so the same letter is worth more the harder the course.

The bottom row holds on every table in the picker: a failing grade is worth 0.00 grade points at every level, so the bonus never rescues a failed AP course.
Weighted GPA above 4.0
The ceiling is the top grade point plus the biggest bonus on offer, so a transcript of A grades in AP courses reports 5.00 on this table: 4.00 for the letter and 1.00 for the level. The same grades in Honors courses report 4.50, and in regular courses 4.00.
Each district sets the bonus itself, so two students with the same letters and the same course loads can report different weighted GPAs, and a term GPA carries whichever convention its school used into the cumulative GPA calculator. The GPA scale page sets the published tables side by side.
Schools that cap the bonus or deny it on a D
The UC GPA (California residents) table adds 1.00 point for each semester of an approved honors, AP or IB course, adds nothing to a grade worth 1.00 or less, which is a D or an F, and stops at 8 extra points across the transcript. It also averages over courses rather than credit hours, and ignores pluses and minuses. Picking it in the scale list applies every one of those rules.
