Weighted Grade Calculator

Multiply every grade by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight. A weight is what the item is worth to the course, so a grade carrying twice the weight moves the average twice as far.

Take homework at 95% worth 20% of the course, quizzes at 82% worth 30%, and a final exam at 78% worth 50%. Multiplied by their weights the three come to 1900, 2460 and 3900, which add up to 8260. Divided by the total weight of 100, the weighted grade is 82.6%, a B on the site's default cutoffs, which the grading scale page sets out in full.

The weights are divided by their own total, so they do not have to reach 100. Change that exam from 50% to 40% and the weights total 90. The answer becomes 83.11%, because each weight is now measured against 90 rather than 100.

That is also how a course part way through the term works. Enter the items that have been graded and leave the rest out, and the answer is the weighted grade on the work done so far. The score the remaining work has to earn for a target grade is what the final grade calculator returns.

The grade column takes percentages, so a raw score is divided by the points possible first: 45 / 50 on a test is 90%. Where a whole category is a pile of raw scores, the grade calculator takes points earned and points possible directly and does that step for every category at once.
