The grade points come from the table selected in the form. Schools set their own, so switch tables if yours prices a letter differently.
How to calculate GPA from letter grades and credit hours
Turn each letter into its grade points, multiply by the course's credit hours to get its quality points, add those up, then divide by the credit hours.
Take English at B over 3 credit hours, Biology at A- over 4, Algebra at B+ over 3 and PE at A over 1. On this table those letters are worth 3.00, 3.70, 3.30 and 4.00 grade points, so the courses carry 9, 14.8, 9.9 and 4 quality points. That is 37.7 quality points over 11 credit hours, a GPA of 3.43.
A course's letter starts life as a percentage, which the grade calculator works out from the categories a syllabus weights. The same quality points carry across every term on a transcript, which is how the cumulative GPA calculator reaches one figure for all of them.
Grade points for each letter grade
Schools split on whether a minus is a tenth or a third below the whole letter, so the same A- is worth 3.70 on one table and 3.67 on the other. Both are in the scale picker, and the GPA scale page tabulates them beside the weighted table and the one that prices an A+ at 4.33.

A course taken at Honors, AP or IB level earns points on top of the letter at most US high schools, and the weighted GPA calculator adds them.
Grades that do not count toward your GPA
P, I, AU, W and the other codes that carry no grade point leave both the quality points and the credit hours, so they change neither side of the division. Biology at A- over 4 hours beside a seminar graded P gives a GPA of 3.70 over 4 credit hours: the seminar's hour still counts toward the credits earned for graduation, and it counts nowhere in this sum.
Which GPA scale your school uses
The tables in the picker disagree about three things: whether a minus sits a tenth or a third below its letter, whether an A+ is worth more than an A, and whether an Honors or AP course earns points on top.

Plus/minus 4.33 prices an A+ at 4.33 and reports the unweighted result no higher than 4.00, so a transcript of straight A+ grades reads 4.00 rather than 4.33. The tables built on whole letters give a plus or a minus the value of its letter, which turns an A- into an A.
