The grade points come from the scale selected in the form. Schools and districts publish their own tables, so change it if yours differs.
How to calculate your high school GPA
Turn each letter grade into its grade points, multiply by the credits the course carries, add the results, and divide by the credits.
Take five one-credit courses graded A, B, B, A and C. Those letters are worth 4.00, 3.00, 3.00, 4.00 and 2.00 grade points on a 4.0 scale, which add up to 16 quality points across 5 credits. That is a GPA of 3.20.
A GPA covers whatever courses are entered, so a single semester and a whole transcript use the same arithmetic. Running it across several terms at once, with each term's credits kept separate, is what the cumulative GPA calculator does.
How Honors and AP courses add weight
A weighted GPA adds points for course difficulty before the division. On this scale an Honors course adds 0.50 and an AP, IB or Dual Enrollment course adds 1.00.
Make the Algebra 2 in that example an Honors course and the AP US History an AP course, and the B in Algebra 2 counts 3.50 rather than 3.00, while the B in AP US History counts 4.00. The quality points rise from 16 to 17.5 over the same 5 credits, so the GPA goes from 3.20 unweighted to 3.50 weighted.

Credits on a high school transcript
A year-long course usually carries one credit and a semester course half of one, so the credits field is the divisor rather than the number of courses. Middle school report cards carry no credits at all, which is why the middle school GPA calculator divides by the number of classes instead.
Take Spanish 2 for one semester instead of the full year in that example. Its C now carries 0.5 credits rather than 1, the quality points fall from 17.5 to 16.5, and the credits counted fall from 5 to 4.5. The weighted GPA rises from 3.50 to 3.67, because the lowest grade now carries half the weight it did.
A course with no credits entered leaves both sides of the division and is listed as left out in the working above, so a Pass or an Audit does not quietly count as a zero.
Letter grades and grade points on a 4.0 scale
The Weighted district scale (Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0) gives a plus or a minus the whole letter's value, so an A- counts 4.00 on it, the same as an A. A school that awards pluses and minuses in the GPA wants the Plus/minus 4.0 (A- is 3.7) instead, where an A- is 3.70 and a B+ is 3.30, or the thirds table, where the same A- is 3.67. All of them sit in the form's scale menu, and the GPA scale page prints each table in full.
The grade a course earns in the first place is a percentage that a school turns into a letter at its own cutoffs, which is where the GPA calculator and the grade calculator pick the course up.
