Letter Grade to GPA
A letter grade converts to a GPA in one step: each letter is worth a fixed number of grade points, and a GPA is the average of those points across courses, weighted by credit hours. The GPA calculator runs a whole transcript through it.
Letter grade to GPA conversion table
Schools that award pluses and minuses use one of two steps between letters: tenths, where an A- is 3.70, or thirds, where it is 3.67. Both columns are below, because a transcript converted on the wrong one comes out a few hundredths off.
| Letter | Percentage | Grade points, tenths | Grade points, thirds |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97% and above | 4.00 | 4.00 |
| A | 93% to 96% | 4.00 | 4.00 |
| A- | 90% to 92% | 3.70 | 3.67 |
| B+ | 87% to 89% | 3.30 | 3.33 |
| B | 83% to 86% | 3.00 | 3.00 |
| B- | 80% to 82% | 2.70 | 2.67 |
| C+ | 77% to 79% | 2.30 | 2.33 |
| C | 73% to 76% | 2.00 | 2.00 |
| C- | 70% to 72% | 1.70 | 1.67 |
| D+ | 67% to 69% | 1.30 | 1.33 |
| D | 63% to 66% | 1.00 | 1.00 |
| D- | 60% to 62% | 0.70 | 0.67 |

The cited page introduces this table as one some colleges use, not a national standard.
Whole letter grades on the 10-point scale
A school that awards no pluses or minuses uses ten percentage points per letter and whole grade points to match, so every A is worth 4.00 however high the percentage behind it.
| Letter | Percentage | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 90% and above | 4.00 |
| B | 80% to 89% | 3.00 |
| C | 70% to 79% | 2.00 |
| D | 60% to 69% | 1.00 |
| F | 0% to 59% | 0.00 |

The College Board table publishes five whole-letter rows and says some schools use pluses and minuses and others set different cutoffs. This scale collapses every plus and minus to its whole letter, so an A- counts as an A.
GPA back to a letter grade
Read the other way, a grade point average lands on the letter its figure matches: 3.70 is an A- and 3.00 is a B. A GPA that lands between two rows is an average of mixed letters rather than a letter of its own.
| Grade points | Letter |
|---|---|
| 4.00 | A+ or A |
| 3.70 | A- |
| 3.30 | B+ |
| 3.00 | B |
| 2.70 | B- |
| 2.30 | C+ |
| 2.00 | C |
| 1.70 | C- |
| 1.30 | D+ |
| 1.00 | D |
| 0.70 | D- |
| 0.00 | F |
