How to calculate the grade you need on the final
Multiply your current grade by the share of the course already graded, subtract that from the grade you want, then divide what is left by the final's share.
With 82% going into a final worth 20% and 85% as the target: the graded work carries 80% of the course, so it contributes 65.6 points. The target of 85 less those 65.6 points leaves 19.4points for the final. Divided by the final's share of 0.2, that is 97% needed on the exam.

When the grade you want is out of reach
A required score above 100% means the target has gone. Sitting at 70% with a final worth 20% and aiming for 90%, the arithmetic asks for 170% on the exam. Scoring 100% instead finishes the course at 76%, a C, and that is the ceiling.

Weight of the final exam
The field starts at 20%, the share a final carries in the most common US semester split of 40% for each term and 20% for the exam. Districts set their own, and a syllabus stating anything from 10% to 40% is ordinary, so replace it with the figure your course publishes.
