How to calculate middle school GPA
Turn each letter grade into its grade points, add them up, and divide by the number of classes.
Six classes graded A, B, A, C, B and A are worth 4.00, 3.00, 4.00, 2.00, 3.00 and 4.00 grade points. Those come to 20 points across 6 classes, which is a GPA of 3.33.
Raising the C in Social Studies to a B lifts the total from 20 grade points to 21 and moves the GPA from 3.33 to 3.50. With 6 classes in the average, one grade carries that much of the answer.
Middle school GPA and credit hours
Middle school classes carry no credit hours, so every class counts once and the divisor is the number of classes rather than a total of credits. A year of band counts exactly as much as a year of math.
High school changes that. Courses there carry credits, a year-long course is worth one and a semester course half of one, and the division runs on credits. The high school GPA calculator takes credits per course and weights Honors and AP classes on top.
Middle school GPA is unweighted
An unweighted GPA gives every class the same point table, so an A is 4.00 whether it comes from an advanced class or a standard one, and 4.00 is the top of the scale.
Weighting adds points for course difficulty and is a high school practice, which is why a weighted GPA can pass 4.00. The weighted GPA calculator adds the Honors and AP bonus a district publishes, and a middle school that labels a class Advanced or Pre-AP without awarding extra grade points is still calculating the unweighted figure this page returns.
Letter grades and grade points on a 4.0 scale
